Jehovah’s Witnesses are, by their own definition, “servants of Jehovah, the Almighty God, and active witnesses to his sovereign supremacy.”1 Claiming to be followers of “Christ their Leader,” they reject any association with the “religious hypocrites of organized Christendom.” Antichrist is defined as “any organization or individual that is against Christ or Christianity.” This includes those who say that “Christ was God incarnate; deny Christ actually came to earth as a Perfect Man of Flesh; the Collective Clergy of Christendom; Pagan Religions; Communistic Red Religion”; and supporters of the United Nations (MS 14–15).

Until around 1950, Jehovah’s Witnesses carried with them a copy of the American Standard Version of the Bible (because it features the name Jehovah throughout the Old Testament). But they faced the embarrassing problem of trying to deny the deity of Christ, while the very Bible they held in their hand said plainly that “the Word was God.” This problem was solved when the Watchtower Society published its own New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures.

At some point during the late 1980s Jehovah’s Witnesses published their 10-billionth (10,000,000,000th) piece of literature. It took more than one hundred years to produce all those books, booklets, magazines, and tracts since the first Watch Tower magazine rolled off the press in the summer of 1879, but the next 10 billion pieces of literature may take little more than a decade, if the sect continues to grow at its present rate.
With a twice-monthly printing in excess of 16 million copies per issue, The Watchtower magazine now approaches the circulation of such all-time favorites as Reader’s Digest and T.V. Guide and easily outsells the combined total of Time, Newsweek, and U.S. News & World Report.

Do you feel frustrated? Does it seem you are getting nowhere in your conversations with Jehovah’s Witnesses? Why is this so often the case?
The most common situation involves the Christian who wants to teach true Christian doctrine to the JW and who therefore starts out trying to do that—explaining the Trinity doctrine, and so on—using the Bible. Sooner or later he notices that he is just spinning his wheels, getting nowhere. Why? Because he has left out some necessary steps. His efforts are comparable to trying to teach calculus without first teaching algebra and arithmetic. You can’t learn calculus without knowing algebra, and you can’t learn algebra without knowing arithmetic. The JW can’t learn Christian doctrine until he first sees that Watchtower doctrine is wrong. And he can’t learn that Watchtower doctrine is wrong until he first sees through the organization’s claim to divine authority as God’s spokesman.

From the sect’s earliest days to the present, Jehovah’s Witnesses have been foretelling what would happen on certain dates, only to be proved wrong when the time arrived.
For example, The Time is at Hand, second volume in the Watchtower Society’s Millennial Dawn or Studies in the Scriptures series was published in 1889 with this prophecy: “… the final end of the kingdoms of this world, and the full establishment of the Kingdom of God, will be accomplished by the end of a.d. 1914.” (page 99)
